Stardust had a chance to talk to Naoto Fukasawa about his latest design; the Demetra Table Lamp recently introduced at Euroluce and for now exclusively available through modern design purveyor Stardust in the US. Here's what Naoto Fukasawa had to say about the Artemide Demetra Lamp.
“Demetra” is the goddess of the harvest in Greek mythology. This is
not only a reference to the physical aspect of my the Demetra desk lamp which I designed for Artemide but equally to the
philosophical perspective, in the sense of “harvesting the utmost benefits of a creative work environment”. In
the case of the lamp “Demetra”, which is produced by Artemide, there is
a single but strong new generation-type LED light which are mounted
inside the round diffuser of the lamp shade. From this base light shines
directly from the diffuser where a calculated reflector surface spreads
the light on to a work plain for optimal reading/work comfort. At the
same time this reflector is outfitted with either a dimmable- or motion
sensor function which allows to the light to be dimmed according to your
preferences. I have also designed the Artemide Demetra Lamp with a
functional interchangeable plug option to accommodate most electrical
outlets for global diversity.

The Demetra Table Lamp
was designed by Naoto Fukasawa for Artemide in
Italy. Naoto Fukasawa
(b.1956) is one of the best-known Japanese product designers working
today. Fukasawa's design philosophy relies on carefully observing what
people
do and feel in their everyday lives in order to find simple solutions
that touch the senses and link to shared memories. Naoto Fukasawas's
life and work are indelibly linked to his thoughts about how people
live, and how they can live better. Stardust considers his style as
"functional minimalism"; a way of design that could be compared to the
legendary design philosophy of German product designer Dieter Rams.
